Exfoliation Without Moisturization is Tyranny
Posted on October 01 2020
Exfoliation + Moisturization (A made-up word, we know. Technically all words are made up, so let's go with it.) = happy, healthy, glowing skin.
Therefore we have decided: “Exfoliation without moisturization is tyranny.”
Coined on our Episoaps of SOAPBOX Live, we believe in the sincerity of this mantra; you simply cannot have one without the other. (Or, you can. You will just be performing an extreme disservice to your skin.)
“My skin is extremely dry and chapped/cracked, do you have a product that can help?”
We hear this concern time and time again in our boutiques.
The answer is yes, of course, we do! Bathhouse carries multiple varieties of moisturizers to combat different types of skin issues. BUT — There’s another facet of the solution that we want to make sure you don’t miss:
As the weather changes, so do the hydration levels in our skin. Somewhere, be that your face, hands, feet, elbows, or knees, maybe you have dry skin that is in need of some serious TLC. Whether this condition is continuous or seasonal, it can be a frustrating experience.
You can slather on as much of our Goat Milk Body Butters or Honey Heel Glaze as you want — we highly encourage that for the luxurious feeling alone — but it won't totally remedy the issue. Yes, it will sink in and smooth those troubled areas for a while, but moisturizing alone is not the whole answer.
Once skin cells have become dry, it is time to say goodbye by sloughing off the old and revealing the new underneath. The way to do that most effectively is by exfoliating with a physical exfoliant.
Physical exfoliation is the process of scrubbing the skin with a physical granule to remove dead, dry skin so that new skin underneath can come to the surface. Skin is the largest organ on the human body — it's important to take care of it.
There is power in exfoliating the skin. It is vital to note here that we don’t just mean any kind of exfoliation. Instead, what we are talking about is focused and intentional exfoliation. At Bathhouse, we create scrubs to cover you from your head to your toes, all handmade with a specific purpose in mind. (We also offer several accessories that are GREAT at exfoliating the skin!)
Our physical exfoliant of choice in the majority of our scrubs is something most of you have in your home: granulated sugar. We love sugar because it is substantial enough to scrub away dead skin effectively, but it is gentle and dissolves when mixed with water to avoid over-scrubbing the skin. Sugar also acts as a natural humectant. Humectants draw moisture from the environment into the skin, and therefore, sugar helps to hydrate and moisturize your skin. Paired with the luscious plant oils that we use in many of our products, our sugar scrubs make sure your skin is in h e a v e n.
Our Foaming Body Scrubs, Lip Scrubs, and Mani & Pedi scrubs are all made with sugar granules. Each type has a different base to emphasize the job at hand. . . or foot.
The only Bathhouse scrub that is a different makeup is our Almond Milk Scrub, which is designed specifically for the face. And let us tell you: it will be the best thing that has ever happened to your skincare routine. This scrub starts with a soapy base and is filled with micro-ground walnut hulls, coconut milk powder, almond flour, and coconut shreds to provide a gentle exfoliation that is ideal for all skin types. We love taking a small dime-sized amount, adding a few drops of water to begin the lather, and then (gently, of course) scrubbing the day off of our faces.
After exfoliating with the scrub(s) of your choice, say hello to the new fresh layer of baby-soft skin underneath! Here’s where the second part of the magic happens: moisturization.
Now that you have scrubbed away the dry skin, don’t leave your newly exposed skin cells out in the open air. NOW is the magical time to slather your skin with your favorite Body Butter, balm, butter, oil, or lip balm. These moisturizers, while adding hydration to the skin, will also create a protective seal to trap in any moisture that already exists.
For each type of scrub, we have designed an intended moisturizer partner (or partners) for you to use in as copious of an amount as you would like. We have even created a cheat sheet for you to reference (pictured above) while you shop so that you always remember that while they are fantastic separately, scrubs and moisturizers should always be a pair. Don't break them up, will ya?
Exfoliation + Moisturization = happy, healthy, glowing skin.
